BUT
in practice the exercise is
more complex as
American Bison and cattle are two different species. In most cases the
direct crossing is unsuccessful. The progeny is either sterile or
the cow aborts.
Some breeders still make the effort to cross
bison and cattle, but most breeders to-day try to achieve the result
by several steps:
How to make a Beefalo in steps
- Take a cow (100% cattle) and a FULLBLOOD Beefalo (37.5% Bison)
- The next generation (F1) is Beefalo (18.75% Bison)
- Cross the F1 to a fullblood Beefalo again
- The result will be a Beefalo, F2 (28.125%)
- Cross the F2 with a fullblood again and
- you get the F3 (32.81% Bison) and you'll go one more generation
- to get your PUREBRED Beefalo (35% Bison)
That's starting from scratch. If you can import embryos or live
Beefalo it makes it shorter and easier.
Some Beefalo definitions
- Bison = 100%
- Bison Hybrid = 75% Bison
- Bison Hybrid = 50% Bison
- Fullblood Beefalo = 37.5% Bison
- Purebred Beefalo = between 34 and 37.4% Bison
- Beefalo = 17% and higher
